Toodyay Road Liaison Committee · Slow Down and Enjoy the Ride

At this year's Gidgegannup Small Farms Day, road safety advisors Karen White and Cliff Simpson of WALGA's RoadWise program were available to talk about road safety matters. At the request of the Toodyay Road Liaison Committee, RoadWise were present with a display and competition on Safe Speeds.

It is a myth that by lowering the speed limit, there will be a significant increase in travel time resulting in being late and in fatigue. Recent changes to the Toodyay Road speed limits will put no more than 2 minutes extra on the travel time from Toodyay to Perth under normal conditions. We know there are not enough passing lanes on Toodyay Road, but remember, to overtake on double white lines is illegal, and not only puts you at risk, but also every other road user. Patience is a virtue!

Please Slow Down, Consider Our Kids.

If you are travelling at 65km/h through the 60km/h speed zone at Gidgegannup, and a child runs onto the road 45 metres ahead, do you think you will stop in time? The answer is no, you would hit that child at 32 km/h. If you were doing 60km/h you would stop (just!) Low level speeding, where people habitually travel at 5km/h over the limit, can be just as dangerous as excessive and inappropriate speeds.

Progress Association · Gidgegannup Urban Precinct

Metropolitan Regional Scheme Amendment 1239/41 – Gidgegannup Urban Precinct. This is now before Parliament for 12 sitting days.

Gidgegannup Progress Association have written to Frank Alban MLA and to Minister for Planning John Day with objections as to why this should be approved by Parliament and at least should be amended:
  • This proposed Amendment does not appear to be supported by either Main Roads or the Department of Water.
  • Main Roads will not support it until the Perth/Adelaide Highway is constructed at the cost of over $1 bn.
  • Water Corporation will not support it unless the water pipeline will service other developments en route.
  • Other infrastructure issues have not been addressed such as Telecommunications and Western Power.
  • The above probably means that should Urban Deferred zoning be granted, it will be at least 15-20 years before Urban zoning is granted.
  • We compare this with the proposed Parkerville/Roland Road which has now been zoned “Urban Deferred” for over 10 years.
  • The WAPC suggest that this will not be the case but this view of a prolonged “Urban Deferred” zoning is supported in the Submissions and Transcripts of Hearings.
  • The proponents suggest that Community consultation has taken place but the only such consultation that has taken place was some five years ago on a Masterplan that covered about 200 ha not the area now suggested and certainly not the 439 ha that is now covered by the existing Masterplan.
  • The proponents base their argument for development on the townsite plan that was drawn up in 1993 of under 200 ha. This was the plan that was endorsed in the North Eastern Hills Settlement Plan of 2002, to accommodate 4000 people.
We would request that this Amendment, now before Parliament, not be approved or amended substantially to take into account the above.

The process of the Amendment has not been transparent or open Government.

Recreational Club · News June 2014

The first half of this year has been a very busy time for the Gidgegannup Recreation Club.

On the activity side we have seen the completion and windups for the Senior and Indoor Cricket Clubs and the Basketball Club.

In February the Rec Club in conjunction with the City of Swan presented an evening of free movies played on an outdoor screen erected on the oval. With over three hundred people in attendance the films commenced with Monster University at 7.00 pm. It was an amazing evening with those kids not engrossed in the movie making use of the courts for some ball practice or playing in the playground or running around on the oval. The kangaroos made for a popular chase target but took off into the bush when their eating was disturbed.

A Swap Meet was held in April and in spite of the start of the rainy period, a sizable crowd of sellers, browsers and buyers were in attendance. The smell of fresh cooked sausages and onions drifting over the oval and those looking for that special find, lead a run on the BBQ stand and a sell-out of the favourite sausage in a bun.

Midland Cycle Club held its annual race around the Hills with all the support vehicle and viewers able to assemble at the oval rather than on the side of Toodyay Road. A win for all concerned.

In April the City of Swan also ran Sustainability workshops for Kids with material and presenters in the hall working with Kids for a fun, fact filled adventure.

Most of the fit out of the new building has been completed and all the relevant licences and equipment is currently been obtained and installed. Rather than race the opening the committee has worked to ensure all elements are in place and functioning before commencing. It will not be long before we are all able to enjoy the Pavilion and all the other elements of the facility. Stay tuned for further news.

Mundaring Pharmacy · Compounding Lab

Mundaring Pharmacy has just established a state-of-the-art on-site compounding facility here in the Hills,

There are several reasons why pharmacists compound prescription medications; yet, the most important one is patient non-compliance. Many patients are allergic to preservatives or dyes, or are sensitive to standard drug strengths. With a prescriber’s consent, a compounding pharmacist can change the strength of a medication and alter its dosage form to make it easier for the patient to ingest.
