Sally Block · Reserve Road Bushfire

Just as you think life is going along very pleasantly and smoothly and you relax, along comes something, whacks you hard and says get smart, life is serious and you had better realise it.

3rd January, Friday afternoon about 4.00 pm when the phone rang. There's a fire in the top paddock, get the gates open for the Fire Brigade.

With the help of two planes plus fire crews from nine areas, a lot of water, very little wind and an efficient machine which is our local Volunteer Fire Brigades, the fire was brought under control and eventually burnt out 20 ha with no casualties apart from the fences.

Bear in mind in summer not to drive in any paddock that has grass that will come into contact with your exhaust. This fire was caused by the exhaust on a ute causing ignition - no carelessness, just not concentrating.

Again thank you to both East and West Gidge Brigades and all the others that come along. The network is great and works so well. Be extremely grateful that we are part of a wonderful, supportive community that is not only Gidgegannup, but extends up to Toodyay, down to the Swan Valley, over to Mundaring, Mt. Helena, Wundowie, up to Morangup and apologies to those I have missed.

Kookaburra Cinema · Season 18 Program 2

Even though film supplies are dwindling some distributors have not entirely ceased supplying and we are pleased to advise that the latest Judi Dench film "Philomena" has been booked to screen Fri to Sun March 7,8 & 9th with the option to screen March 5 & 6th if demand is sufficient.

Thus if the proposed Wed & Thursday screening of Philomena suits you more I would like to hear your thoughts as running an extra 2 screenings should help ease the potential crush on the usual 3 nights as feedback to date has been that this film will be very popular.

In the final program for this season it is intended to screen as a retrospective a few of the older films that had been popular in past summers such as Brassed Off and Cinema Paradiso and if enough support try and squeeze in a Humphrey Bogart weekend screening 2 of his early films "Maltese Falcon" and "The Big Sleep" in which Lauren Bacall stars with him for their first of many films together.

Trust that you find something to your interest in this latest program.

Regards, Lindsay @ Kookaburra
