Fire Brigades · Fireban message not getting through

It seems that the message regarding fire bans is not getting through!

It also seems that common sense is becoming far less common!

On 26th Dec there were 2 fires in the City of Swan believed to have been started by vehicles. The first was in Reserve Rd. Approximately 5 ha burnt, believed to have been started by a motorbike: "But we were only riding on the driveway!" Prompt action by brigades prevented this becoming a very large and serious fire. The residents were unaware that a Harvest and Vehicle Movement Ban was in force. This ignorance is very widespread in Gidge despite numerous Gidgegram articles, annual City notices, website postings, etc.

The second was in Upper Swan believed to have been started by a car exhaust in grass.

There was also one during the evening in Chidlow caused when residents did "burnouts" in paddocks.

PLEASE make sure your neighbours and friends in Gidge are aware that both DFES and City of Swan issue bans. The wider this message is spread, the less likely you will suffer the consequences of a bushfire as a result of non-compliance.

Details of Total Fire Bans can be found at the DFES (FESA) website or on 1800 709 355. Details of Harvest and Vehicle Movement Bans can be found by ringing the City of Swan fire info line 9267 9326. Also advised on ABC 720 AM at 10:05, 13:05, 14:05.

For general information check the Gidgegannup Fire Brigades newsletters, the DFES (FESA) website and the City of Swan website.

DO NOT rely on the City of Swan website to advise if it has a ban currently in force, you need to ring 9267 9326.

Ag Department · New alert for water hyacinth in Perth Hills

The Department of Agriculture and Food has issued a new alert for water hyacinth, a declared plant in Western Australia and one of the world’s worst water weeds.

Department technical officer Brett Scourse said a recent report had been received of water hyacinth being sold roadside at a property in the Perth Hills area.

"It is also still occasionally found in garden ponds in the metropolitan Perth and in country regions," Mr Scourse said. "Water hyacinth may look attractive but it is an aquatic weed which presents a major threat to our environment and economy. It has recently been listed as a Weed of National Significance."

Mr Scourse said the weed could clog waterways, reducing fish populations, harbouring mosquitoes and causing problems for communities by waterways.

"It must be eradicated for the good health of our rivers and other waterways," he said. "It is illegal to sell or keep water hyacinth in WA and it must not be imported."

"The plants can be destroyed by composting – the solution in this instance – or by drying them out and placing securely in a plastic bag before disposing in a rubbish bin."

Suspect plants can be reported to the Pest and Disease Information Service on freecall 1800 084 881 or to the nearest department office.
