Netball Club · Registration Day

Well it's nearly time again... The 2011 Winter Netball season is soon approaching and we are holding our registration days next week.

Registration will be held at the Gidge Rec Centre (Percy Cullen Oval) on Monday the 21st Feb and Wednesday 23rd Feb from 3.30 to 5.00pm each day.

Please find attached an information sheet, including fee structure and committee contacts, along with a registration form.

- Information Sheet..
- Registration Form..

Forms will also be available on the day. If you would like to play, or you would like your child to play, please attend one of these days to register.

We are a little short on committee members this year, and as they say 'more hands make light work'!! In particular, we are still looking for a secretary (our previous secretary has resigned) an equipment officer, and a few other smaller positions. It would be greatly appreciated if someone could come to our rescue!! We are going to hold a special meeting after the registration day on Monday 21st Feb to hopefully gain some more committee members. If you are interested please come along to the meeting. If you are unable to attend this meeting please phone one of the committee members.

We are also always looking for anyone that is interested in coaching netball. The club supports coaches by paying for coach's training courses and supplying all the equipment. Please contact a committee member if this interests you.

Anyway, hopefully see you at one of our registration days!

Many thanks, Tracey Snowden GNC Registrar

Fire Brigades · Total Fire Ban 5 February

Due to a forecast Severe Fire Danger Rating FESA has declared a Total Fire Ban for the lower west, including the whole of the City of Swan, for 24 hours from midnight 4th Feb, i.e. for the whole of 5th Feb.

City of Swan is almost certain to declare a Harvest and Vehicle Movement Ban for the whole of the City of Swan for 5th Feb. For updates listen to ABC 720 at 10:05 am.

Penalties for ban violations can be up to $25,000 and/or 12 months imprisonment and ignorance of a ban in force is NOT a legal defence against prosecution.

The consequences of actions contrary to Ban restrictions can be devastating for the community.

Recreational Club · International Volunteer Day

Gidgegannup Recreation Club was involved in the International Volunteer Day programme for the first time this year (2010) and held a small ceremony to acknowledge the efforts of only some of our volunteers in the community.

Volunteers Day 2010 Sandra Harms (Ag Society), Mary-Lou McCrudden (Rec Club), Peter Whife

23 nominations were acknowledged, including volunteers from local sporting groups, landcare, Gidge firebrigade, and cancer support, just to name a few groups. These volunteers were presented with a certificate of recognition from the president of Gidgegannup Rec Club, Peter Whife.

International Volunteers Day

Whatever the area they volunteer in, volunteers benefit their entire community and help make it a better place to live. It was an inspiring and humbling experience to see what a difference the volunteers have made to their community and how valued they are within their organisation.

Peter Coppin · Damaged Trees and Shrubs

Following the devastating fires last week, I have received a few queries on what to do with damaged trees and shrubs, so below I have pasted the one I did after the Perth storms last year (I witnessed gardeners and arborists busily pruning where it isn't necessary). The principles are the same, I have just made some changes to suit fire.

- Peter Coppin's E-Letter #5..

A water-wise mulch is one that lets the water through into the soil where it's needed, i.e. it has course, irregular-shaped particles. Unfortunately many of the expensive mulches on the market actually loose more water than bare soil because they act like a wick.
