Fire Brigades · Restricted Burning Season

The prohibited burning season officially ends 14 April 2010 for the City of Swan and we have been advised that a further extension will not be imposed.

The restricted period, which is programmed to be in place until 31 May 2010, means you need to have a permit to burn. Due to the lack of significant rainfall in most locations the bush is still very dry and the risk for small burns to get out of control remains high. Accordingly, Fire Control Officers and Permit Issuing Officers may not issue permits for all requests and where they do are likely to place strict restrictions on permits to burn such as – size of burn, timing of burn, preparation and extinguishment capabilities of land owners.

As we pass from the prohibited to restricted season it is timely to outline the process for obtaining a permit to burn for Gidgegannup Residents. For residents in East Gidgegannup permits are issued at the Fire shed between 8.30am and 10am Saturday mornings commencing 24 April 2010. For residents in West Gidgegannup please call 08 9754 6536 for an appointment to discuss burning and permits. The permit issuing officer may refuse a permit for your burn, please respect they are within their rights to do so. A condition on permits is that neighbours are afforded four days advance notice so please factor this into your plans. Permits are automatically suspended on days of Very High or Extreme Fire danger.

The recent rains, cooler days, damp nights and the emergence of new growth is welcomed, however bush and ungrazed lands still pose a significant threat to the spread of fire through our community and we respectfully ask that you hold off a few more weeks before requesting a permit and utilise the time to plan smaller burns once permits are more readily available.

Gidgegannup Development · Townsite bid clears hurdle

Port Bouvard’s plans to create a townsite at Gidgegannup appear to be moving ahead after clearing a hurdle with the City of Swan this week.

At its meeting on Wednesday, the City agreed to advise the WA Planning Commission it does not object to the proposed amendment to the Metropolitan Region Scheme for subject lots to be rezoned from "rural" to "urban".

But the City will advise the WAPC that its lack of objection should not be seen as support for Port Bouvard’s Masterplan for Gidgegannup. The applicant will still be required to submit comprehensive local structure plans of future development to council for approval.

Gidgegannup Development · Proposed Rezoning to Urban

Please note that in early March the Western Australian Planning Commission requested the City's advice on a proposed amendment to the Metropolitan Region Scheme (MRS) to rezone a portion of the subject area from 'Rural' to 'Urban'. This rezoning is intended to be the first step in proposed development of the townsite area, and is suggested by Port Bouvard to be an extension of the City's Gidgegannup Rural Strategy.

It is anticipated that the Council will consider this matter at the upcoming Ordinary Council Meeting on the 7th April 2010.
